Karl August Jentsch

Karl August Jentsch (also Carl August Jentsch , Sorbian Korla Awgust Jenč ; born October 8, 1828 in Zschorna , Upper Lusatia ; † March 15, 1895 in Pohla , Upper Lusatia) was a Sorbian pastor and literary historian.

From 1841 Karl August Jentsch attended grammar school in Bautzen . There he co-founded the Societas Slavica Budissinensis ( Bautzener Wendish Society ). Since 1847 he was a member of the Maćica Serbska . In 1848 Jentsch began studying Protestant theology in Leipzig . There he became a member of the Lausitzer Predigergesellschaft zu Leipzig and co-founded the student brotherhood Lipa Serbska .

After graduating, he worked as a private tutor in Lindow from 1852, and in Baruth near Bautzen from 1853 . In 1855 he took over the pastoral position in Pohla, which he held until his death. He was the last Sorbian pastor in Pohla, where in the 1880s a fifth of the population spoke Sorbian. His grave is at the Pohla church.

Karl August Jentsch published several articles on the history of Sorbian literature .
