Karl Donath

Karl Donath (born July 28, 1935 in Leipzig , † September 23, 2010 in Rödinghausen ) was a German oral pathologist and biomaterial researcher .

Karl Donath mainly devoted himself to research into diseases of the oral cavity . He was also decisively involved in the development of methods for the production of histological thin sections from non-cuttable materials such as bone and implant materials .

Life

After training as a dental technician in Leipzig and fleeing the GDR, he studied medicine at the University of Münster . From 1969 he received training as a pathologist at the University of Hamburg, where he completed his habilitation in 1975. He also completed a degree in dentistry by 1981 . From 1986 until his retirement in 1999 he headed the newly established department for oral pathology at the Institute for Pathology at the University of Hamburg.

Research priorities

Karl Donath has published more than 250 scientific works and numerous book chapters on the research areas of the salivary gland diseases , periodontics , odontogenic tumors and cysts , jaw bone diseases , bone replacement materials , biomaterials and implants. His contributions to the development of the separating thin section technique are of great practical importance. This process enables the production of histological specimens in the soft and bone tissue that cannot be cut. The Karl Donath Laboratory named after him at the University Dental Clinic of the Medical University of Vienna continues its research work in oral implantology and osteological basics.
