Karl Elliger

Karl Richard Gustav Elliger (born March 7, 1901 in Heppens (today part of Wilhelmshaven ), † October 31, 1977 in Tübingen ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Elliger received his doctorate in 1927 at the University of Münster and completed his habilitation there in 1929. In 1934 Albrecht Alt brought him to the University of Leipzig as an assistant . From 1937 he taught as an associate professor at the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Tübingen . In 1950 he was appointed to the Tübingen chair for the Old Testament , which he held until his retirement in 1968.

Elliger's most important work was the collaboration on the edition of the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia . In addition, he wrote numerous essays and commentaries on books of the Old Testament.

His younger brother was the church historian Walter Elliger .
