Charles Emanuel II
Charles Emanuel II of Savoy (Italian Carlo Emanuele II di Savoia ; born June 20, 1634 in Turin , † June 12, 1675 in Turin) was Duke of Savoy , Prince of Piedmont , Margrave of Saluzzo , Count of Aosta , Moriana , Asti and Nice and titular king of Cyprus and Jerusalem (1638–1675).
Life
Karl Emanuel II was born as the third son of Viktor Amadeus I of Savoy and his wife Christina of France . His maternal grandparents were Henry IV and his second wife Maria de 'Medici . In 1638 he succeeded his older brother Francesco Hyacinth , who had died at the age of six, as Duke of Savoy at the age of four. At the same time he was Duke of Nemours and Ghent . His first marriage was in 1663 with Françoise d'Orléans . In 1665 he married Maria Baptista von Savoyen-Nemours in his second marriage , with whom he had the son Viktor Amadeus II. , Later King of Sardinia . Among other things, he appointed the writer Emanuele Tesauro to teach his children to the court.
His power-conscious mother managed the affairs of state for her son as regent until 1648 , afterwards in his name, who led a life of pleasure, far from ruling. Only after the death of his mother in 1663 did he take over the official business. Karl Emanuel tried to assert his country against the influence of the powerful neighbor France . In 1672/73 he waged a war against Genoa in order to gain access to the sea on the Ligurian coast. However, this undertaking failed.
He promoted trade, expanded the port of Nice and contributed to the wealth of the duchy. He replaced the army, which until then had consisted of mercenaries , with a standing army . He also built an alpine crossing from northern Italy towards France, the so-called Chemin des Grottes des Échelles .
