Karl Fazer , actually Karl Otto Fazer (born August 16, 1866 in Helsinki , † October 9, 1932 in Jokioinen ) was a Finnish baker , confectioner , chocolatier and entrepreneur for chocolate and confectionery . He is the founding father of today's company Oy Karl Fazer Ab and the Fazer brand .

Life

Fazer's father Eduard Peter Fazer (actually Fatzer ) was a Swiss furrier and emigrated to Finland .

The young Fazer learned the bakery and confectionery trade in Berlin , Paris and Saint Petersburg . At the age of 25, he opened a “Russian-French café and pastry shop ” in the center of Helsinki . However, his real interest lay in the factory production of chocolate, confectionery and pralines . In 1895 he started the manual production of confectionery in the back rooms of the café, three years later he opened the first factory in another building. In 1898 he was able to move into a larger factory building with his company.

In the following years the company expanded and in 1908 the Fazer brand became a registered trademark . At the same time, Karl Fazer moved into representative business premises for the sale of his products. At that time Finland was still an autonomous grand duchy in the Russian Empire. After the liberation in 1917, Fazer also benefited from the country's rapid economic boom. Among other things, Fazer acquired the Finnish-English Kexfabrik located in the city of Hanko in 1927, thereby expanding biscuit production. In addition to production and sales , Fazer also invested in upscale gastronomy : in 1930, an elegant, modern café with patisserie and restaurant was opened in Helsinki in a new building ; Fazer cafes still exist in Finland to this day.

Karl Fazer was not only a businessman, but also a great lover of nature. He was particularly interested in ornithology. He established a nature reserve for birds in the Åland Islands and introduced the pheasant to Finnish nature. Karl Fazer was also an avid hunter and fisherman. In 1932 Karl Fazer died in Jokioinen, where he owned a hunting lodge. Today Fazer is an international group in the confectionery, bakeries and food services industries.
