Carl Franz Meyer (baptized September 23, 1763 in Aachen ; † February 19, 1821 there ) was a German historian , private scholar and archivist for the city of Aachen.

Live and act

The son of the meritorious Aachen city archivist Karl Franz Meyer and Johanna Maria Faucken went through the same professional career as his father after completing school at the Aachen Marianum, the later Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium . After completing his studies, he first became procurator at the court of lay judges of the canton of Burtscheid in the Arrondissement d'Aix-la-Chapelle ( German: Aachen ) of the Département de la Roer . In May 1803, like his father, he took over the Aachen city archives , which were outsourced to Munster when the French marched in 1794 , but were returned to Aachen in 1797. However, Meyer could not prevent that in 1803, at the instigation of the French national archivist Armand Gaston Camus, 87 imperial and papal documents were transferred to the Paris National Library , most of which Aachen was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 after the end of the French occupation got back. After Aachen was annexed to Prussia, Meyer continued to hold the position of city archivist.

In addition, he worked as a private scholar and thus had an extensive private library. These and the collected copies of his father's books became posthumously the basis of the Aachen City Library, which opened on July 18, 1831 . Karl Franz Leonhard Meyer, in contrast to his incumbent mayor and later mayor, Cornelius von Guaita , was also unable to make friends with the French occupation, did not speak the French language and therefore had problems sufficiently marketing his works in German.

In addition, Meyer was the founder of an antiquity cabinet , which was inspected by many high-ranking personalities. Meyer counted King Friedrich Wilhelm III during the Aachen Congress in 1818 . von Prussia , Emperor Franz I of Austria and Tsar Alexander I of Russia were among the enthusiastic visitors to this cabinet of antiquities and he was then promoted to the Prussian court councilor . In addition, the Austrian Emperor had the city archive shown and praised its collection.
