Karl Held

Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Held (born February 6, 1830 in Treptow an der Tollense , † May 30, 1870 ) was a German Protestant theologian . He worked mainly in Zurich , Breslau and Bonn until a mental illness put an end to his work.

Born in Western Pomerania , he was raised by his mother after the early death of his father. Held attended high school in Stettin and then studied Protestant theology at the University of Halle . In Halle, Held was particularly encouraged by August Tholuck and won over to an academic career. At the local Theological Faculty he acquired the academic degree of licentiate of theology , and he also was from the University of Rostock to Dr. phil. PhD.

Held became a repetiteur at the University of Göttingen in 1860 . The Evangelical Society of Zurich noticed him and called him to Zurich , where he worked as a preacher and lecturer at the University of Zurich . In 1865 he was appointed professor at the University of Breslau , where he also worked as an academic preacher. But in 1866 he was transferred to the University of Bonn for health reasons , because of the milder climate. Here a mental illness put an end to his work; he was admitted to Illenau , a sanatorium and nursing home, and died in 1870.
