Karl Hörmann (born November 17, 1948 in Dillingen an der Donau ) is a German medical doctor, ENT doctor and university professor.

Life

After studying medicine at the Universities of Munich, Vienna and Kiel, Karl Hörmann passed the German and US state exams in 1974 and received his doctorate in 1974 from the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich . At the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), he was recognized as a specialist in ear, nose and throat diseases in 1982, where he became a senior physician and completed his habilitation in 1985 on "Middle ear effusions, pathogenesis and pathophysiology". In 1987 he became acting director of the ENT clinic of the Medical University of Lübeck and in 1989 chief physician of the ENT clinic of the clinic in the university town of Kaiserslautern. In 1993 he accepted the professorship for ENT medicine at the Faculty of Clinical Medicine Mannheim of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg as director of the University ENT Clinic of the University Medical Center Mannheim .

Achievements and work

From 1999 to 2013 Hörmann was elected vice dean and deputy dean of the Mannheim Medical Faculty of the Ruprechts-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. During this time, two successful assessments by the Science Council and the expansion to a full faculty, combined with the introduction of the reform course MARECUM (Mannheim reform curriculum), took place. From 2003 to 2017 he was President of the German ENT Academy. From 2004 to 2007 he was elected as a review board member of the review board FK 206 (clinical neurosciences) of the German Research Foundation (FG). During his time as President of the ORL Section & Board of the UEMS (Union of European Medical Specialists) from 2009 to 2013, he established the European Board Examination of ORLHNS (EBEORLHNS). In 2006, Hörmann was President of the German Society for ENT Medicine, Head and Neck Surgery, in 2008 the German Society for Endoscopy and Imaging Techniques (DGE-BV), in 2009 the First Meeting of the European Academy of ORLHNS, and in 2012 Co-President of the German Society for sleep research and sleep medicine (DGSM) in Mannheim. He has been President of the German Interdisciplinary Society for Dysphagia (DGD) since 2015 and of the EASM (European Academy of Sleep Medicine) since 2005. Since 2007 he has been reappointed twice as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Medical Association .

In addition to sleep medicine, his focus is on multimodal therapy for head and neck tumors, cochlear implants and plastic surgery .

Honors

Hörmann is an honorary member of the German, Czech, Austrian, Estonian, Polish, Spanish, Royal Belgian, Romanian ENT Society, the Japan-Broncho-Esophogeal Society, the German Professional Association of ENT Doctors. In 2011 he was honored with the Eugene N. Myers International Lecture in San Francisco, USA, and in 2012 as Professor by the Royal Society of Medicine London , UK.
