Karl Hummel (geologist)
Karl Hummel (born October 14, 1889 in Karlsruhe , † April 7, 1945 near Lanzenhain ) was a German geologist , paleontologist and university professor .
Life
Hummel studied medicine for two semesters in Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich in 1909/1910 , but then switched to geology and paleontology. In 1913 he received his doctorate in palaeontology from Wilhelm Deecke in Freiburg. phil. PhD and worked briefly as a research assistant. In the First World War he took part as a lieutenant in the field artillery and as a military geologist . Then Hummel worked again as a scientific assistant in Freiburg and from 1920 at the Geological Institute of the University of Giessen. Appointments as private lecturer (1920), extraordinary (1924) and scheduled professor (1936) followed. From 1934 he headed the Geological Institute. In World War II he was again an artillery officer and military geologist and fell shortly before the end of the war.
Hummel joined the NSDAP and the SA in 1931 . In Giessen he became NS lecturer leader.
meaning
In addition to numerous scientific publications on tectonic studies, volcanism, stratigraphy, sediment formation processes, deposit geology and palaeontology, the NDB highlights two contributions by Hummel. On the one hand, he introduced the term Halmyrolyse in 1922 for “submarine weathering, mineral destruction and new formation”. On the other hand, he dealt critically with Hanns Hörbiger and his world ice theory, which is now considered scientifically refuted , which he accused of factual errors and mistakes.

The works of the geologist Karl Hummel are incorrectly not to be found in the GND 117062332, but were mixed in with the GND 141541849 of the pharmacologist Karl Hummel. For example, all books except No. 2 can be assigned to the geologist.
