Karl I of Hessen-Philippsthal (born September 23, 1682 in Schmalkalden , † May 8, 1770 in Philippsthal ) from the House of Hessen was paraged Landgrave of Hessen-Philippsthal .

Life

Karl was the eldest son of Landgrave Philipp von Hessen-Philippsthal from his marriage to Katharina Amalie (1654–1736), daughter of Count Karl Otto von Solms-Laubach . He followed his father in 1721 as Landgrave of Hessen-Philippsthal, a small Paragium within the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel .

Karl entered the Danish service in 1701 and fought in the War of the Spanish Succession . On March 10, 1710, he distinguished himself in the Battle of Helsingborg and was promoted to major general. In 1715 he was involved in the landing on Rügen and the siege of Stralsund . Then he entered French services.

On June 6, 1731 he was awarded the Danish Elephant Order . During the Seven Years' War he temporarily took refuge in his Lübeck house at Schildstrasse 10 .

He later entered the imperial military service, where he rose to field marshal lieutenant .

On November 24, 1725, Karl married Karoline Christine (1699–1743) in Eisenach , daughter of Duke Johann Wilhelm von Sachsen-Eisenach , with whom he had the following children:
