Imperial Count Karl III. von Ortenburg (born February 2, 1715 in Ortenburg ; † March 1, 1776 ibid) was the only son of Count Johann Georg von Ortenburg and his second wife, Princess Maria Albertina of Nassau-Saarbrücken , who grew up to adulthood. He came from the Lower Bavarian noble house of Ortenburg . After the death of his father in 1725, Johann Georg nominally took over the regency, but under the tutelage of his mother until he came of age in 1739.

Charles III was born on February 2, 1715 in Ortenburg , the immediate imperial county . After his father died at the age of 39, Karl became nominally Count of Ortenburg at the age of 10 in 1725. His mother, Princess Maria Albertina of Nassau-Saarbrücken , received his guardianship . This tried to obtain Bavarian citizenship for the Ortenburg population. Although the Landshut Vizedom campaigned for it, it did not materialize.

On May 5, 1739, Charles III took over. at the age of majority the Ortenburg government The enfeoffment with the county took place by the imperial vicars, Elector Karl Albrecht of Bavaria and Elector Karl Philipp of the Palatinate on October 24, 1741. The beginning of his term of office was overshadowed by the War of the Austrian Succession . Karl had to grant the armies passage and stationing rights in the small county. In 1751 he finished the renovation of the Ortenburg market church that had begun in 1703 by completing the church tower with an onion dome. The cost of the work was 870 guilders. Charles III died on March 1, 1776 in Ortenburg. He was buried in the Protestant tomb in the Marktkirche in Ortenburg.

Remarkable

From his marriage to Louisa Sophia Wild- und Rheingräing zum Stein there were 14 children. This represents the largest number of offspring in the Ortenburg family to this day. Only his ancestor Sebastian I had a similar number of children at 13.
