Karl Albrecht (Ortenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reichsgraf Karl Albrecht von Ortenburg (born June 30, 1743 in Ortenburg , † February 5, 1787 at Neuburg am Inn Castle ) was the eldest son of Count Karl III. von Ortenburg and his wife Countess Sophia Wild- and Rhine Countess zum Stein. Karl Albrecht came from the Lower Bavarian noble house of Ortenburg . After the death of his father in 1776, he took over the reign of the immediate imperial county, which he held until his death in 1787.

Live and act

Karl Albrecht was born on June 30, 1742 in Ortenburg . In 1763 he entered the royal Prussian military service. He worked there until 1776, most recently as a major. His two younger brothers Ludwig Emanuel and Christian Friedrich also followed him into Prussian military service.

After the death of his father Karl III. In 1776, Karl Albrecht became the ruling count of the local empire county of Ortenburg . On July 31, 1776, Karl Albrecht and his brothers agreed on the introduction of the primogeniture , which is why the seniority principle , which had been in force in the count's house since 1566, was abolished. Instead of the eldest of the family, the eldest son of the last ruling count became his heir. Karl Albrecht's enfeoffment took place on March 18, 1777 by Emperor Josef II.

In 1776 Karl Albrecht obtained a toll exemption from Passau's Prince-Bishop Leopold Ernst von Firmian for goods bought in Passau . In 1779 he banned Prussia from recruiting troops in his county, which his father had once allowed in 1768. The aim of this ban was probably to create a better relationship with the emperor.

During a visit to Passau Bishop Joseph Franz Anton von Auersperg at Neuburg am Inn Castle , Karl Albrecht died unexpectedly on February 5, 1787 and was buried in the Protestant tomb in the Marktkirche Ortenburg . His then underage son Joseph Carl followed him as regent of the county under the tutelage of his mother Christiane Louise Wild- und Rheingräfin zum Stein.
