Karl Johann Christian Grapengiesser
Karl Johann Christian Grapengiesser (* 1773 in Parchim ; † October 13, 1813 in Berlin ) was a German doctor .
Life
Karl Johann Christian Grapengiesser studied medicine at the universities of Berlin and Göttingen and obtained his medical doctorate by defending the dissertatio inauguralis de hydrope plethorico (Göttingen 1795) . He then went on a journey through Germany, Switzerland , France and Italy for his further training . He stayed in Vienna and Paris for a long time and gained knowledge of surgery in particular through his work in various hospitals .
After returning home, Grapengiesser settled in his hometown as a general practitioner and caused a sensation with his new method of curing several diseases by means of galvanism . He also sought to recommend this treatment method through his own writing ( attempt to use galvanism to cure some diseases , Berlin 1801; 2nd edition Berlin 1802). In 1803 he was appointed professor and a member of the Collegium medico-chirurgicum in Berlin. Soon after, he became the personal physician of Prince Henry, and later attending physician of the Prussian king. In 1813 he was the chief physician of a military hospital and died on October 13 of the same year at the age of 40 of typhus , which he had contracted through infection in this hospital.
Strange examples were told of his eye treatments. His attempts to extend his medical art to the cure of eye diseases in animals did not have the hoped-for success. In 1811 he operated a horse for cataracts ; the operation also turned out to be manual, but the horse saw nothing with the operated eye. The pupil had contracted completely; the iris was flat and the globe was reduced.
