Karl Josef von Fabert (born October 1, 1790 in Kehl ; † March 12, 1860 ) was a major general of the Grand Duke of Baden and most recently a member of the War Ministry. He is considered to be the progenitor of the Baden pioneers .

Life

His father was Franz Josef von Fabert (born June 8, 1751).

Fabert received his education at the schools in Mannheim and Heidelberg. After graduating, he joined the Baden artillery battalion against his parents' wishes on July 1, 1808. In 1808 he was transferred to the 3rd foot artillery battery (Captain Karl von Lassolaye (1784–1863), later lieutenant general), which was marched to support the French troops in Spain, and in 1809 he was second lieutenant. He fought in 6 battles and 10 major skirmishes and came home safe and sound as a Premier Lieutenant. After Napoleon's defeat in Leipzig , Baden also switched sides; therefore the young Fabert, who was just in Daix , was disarmed and imprisoned there. In 1813 he received the Knight's Cross of the Karl Friedrich Military Merit Order . He returned in 1814, but no longer took part in the campaign of 1814, but found the opportunity to prove himself in the summer campaign of 1815 .

After the war, on October 6, 1819, he was given command of the newly established engineer company as a staff captain. Here he became the founder of the Baden pioneers through his theoretical and practical work. In 1824 he wrote a textbook, which attracted a lot of attention at the time. In 1827 he became a real captain. In 1832 he became inspector of the armory. In 1835 he was promoted to major and in 1838 lieutenant colonel. He had meanwhile become director of the armory. On December 24, 1839 he was appointed a member of the War Ministry. There he was technical manager and in this position on November 4, 1844 promoted to colonel. As early as 1843 he was commander of the 2nd class of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen .

He received the character of major general on October 23, 1852 and retired after 44 years of service.
