Karl Köther (cyclist, 1905)

Karl Köther (born May 28, 1905 in Hanover ; † 1986 ) was a German track cyclist .

Karl Köther began his active cycling career at the age of 16. In 1926 and 1927 he was German champion over one and over ten kilometers. The highlight of his career was winning the bronze medal at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam in a tandem race with Hans Bernhardt , who was his greatest competitor at the national level.

In 1933 Köther, who had 400 victories as an amateur, turned professional, but in 1936 he retired from active cycling and opened a bicycle shop in Hanover. He was also active as a functionary, ran the cycling track in Hanover-Wülfel and was the sports director of the Hanover six-day race .

His son, Karl Köther jr., Was German champion in the 1000 m time trial in 1971 ; in this discipline he took fourth place at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich .

Karl Köther senior founded a bike shop on Engelbosteler Damm in 1936 .
