Karl Kaniak

Karl Kaniak (born January 29, 1872 in Simmering (today: Vienna ); † August 13, 1931 (according to other information September 16, 1931 ) in Vienna) was a working-class poet and singer.

Kaniak, who grew up in the poorest of circumstances, learned the profession of stone printer and made it up to the factor (head of the typesetting) of the Austrian National Bank . In addition, Kaniak was a poor councilor and active in the workers' education movement. He was one of the co-founders of the Simmeringen workers ' singers ' association Stahlklang and promoter of the children's singing school movement . His many poems and sketches dealt mainly with the life of the Simmering proletariat; he published mainly in the Arbeiter-Zeitung , in the socialist women 's newspaper Die Unzufriedene and in various trade union newspapers .

The Kaniakgasse in Simmering was named after him. He lived at Geiselbergstrasse 5 (also Simmering), which a memorial plaque reminds of.
