In the winter semester of 1848/49 he passed the theological faculty examination, and in November 1851 the state examination. In 1852 Müller was given the management of the co-preacher and rectorate position in Alsfeld. The municipal council unanimously proposed him in 1862 for the vacant position of the second pastor of Alsfeld, which he took up after confirmation by the sovereign. In 1874 he became the first pastor, in 1875 a member of the regional synod, in the same year chairman of the city school board, in 1882 dean of the Alsfeld dean's office.

In 1865 he published his first book "Character drawings of the most excellent German song birds", which was quickly followed by others, in 1867 a hunting album in two parts ("Waidmanns Heil" and "The dog and his hunt") and in 1873 "The benefits of and use of the native mammals and birds Damage in agriculture and forestry ”, which was recommended by the ministries of various countries to higher education institutions for teaching purposes. In 1883 the Müller brothers published their main work "Animals of the Homeland", a second edition of which came out in 1894. The other works also achieved wide distribution. There was a close exchange with Alfred Brehm , who was repeatedly a guest in the Alsfeld rectory.
