Karl Müller (born April 7, 1893 in Gerresheim , † October 18, 1949 in Düsseldorf ) was a German attorney with a doctorate and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime .

Life

Müller was the son of the bailiff Theodor Müller and his wife Anna, née Winkelius. He was raised strictly Catholic. In Düsseldorf he attended elementary school, then a Progymnasium in Eupen and switched to the Petrinum Gymnasium in Dorsten . In 1914 he passed his school leaving examination in Bocholt . From 1914 he took part in the First World War as a soldier . He began studying law in 1916 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , continued it in 1917 at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster and studied from 1920 at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald . There he received his doctorate in March 1921 with the dissertation National and International Official Language .

From Düsseldorf, where he had lived after stints in Cologne and Saarbrücken, he emigrated to France with his wife Charlotte in 1932. After the divorce in 1935 he returned to Düsseldorf and settled as a lawyer. Müller cultivated contacts with opponents of National Socialism, including the lawyer Karl August Wiedenhofen . When Düsseldorf was besieged by Allied troops from March 1945 towards the end of the Second World War , the NSDAP Gauleiter Friedrich Karl Florian gave the order on March 28, 1945 to evacuate and destroy the city. In April 1945, Müller took part in an action by citizens of Düsseldorf, the Action Rhineland , to hand over the city to the advancing American forces without a fight.

After the end of the Second World War, Müller worked as a lawyer again in Düsseldorf. In 1948 he married Elisabeth Regine Krüll. He died in 1949 at the age of 56.

Honors

Müller has a grave of honor in the north cemetery in Düsseldorf. The Karl-Müller-Straße in Dusseldorf-Düsseltal was named after him.
