chess

Mayerhofer made a name for himself as a strong Viennese chess player even before his studies in London: among other things, he measured himself against Carl Hamppe . In London he met Howard Staunton , William Davies Evans , Lionel Kieseritzky and other greats of the time. In 1851 he took part in the Cup tournament in London, which was organized following the first international tournament on the occasion of the World's Fair . Mayerhofer came second after Adolf Anderssen , to whom he was defeated in the final of the knockout tournament.

Mayerhofer was an honorary member of the Vienna Chess Club and gave the club financial support and an extensive legacy.
