Karl Michel (painter)

Karl Michel (also Carl Michel , born March 6, 1885 in Leipzig ; † April 12, 1966 in Zwickau ) was a German painter , graphic artist and wood cutter .

Life

Karl Michel first completed an apprenticeship as an electrical mechanic . From 1903 to 1909 he studied at the Academy in Leipzig , first in the department for applied graphics with Georg Belwe and Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens , then in the department of graphic techniques with Schelter and Buthold and finally in the department of painting and graphics with Fritz Rentsch . He then studied at the educational establishment of Decorative Arts Berlin , where he was a master student of Emil Doepler . From 1912 to 1945 he taught as a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin . From 1948 to 1952 he worked as a lecturer at the painting and drawing school in Zwickau and has been its director since 1952. From 1946 until his death he worked as a freelancer in Zwickau. Karl Michel was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . He is considered one of the stylistic innovator of bookplate -Kunst.

Karl Michel was married. He created several beautiful bookplate pieces for himself, his wife Elise and for the couple.
