Karl Otto Christe (born July 24, 1936 in Ulm ) is a German inorganic chemist . He has been Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Southern California since 1994 .

Life

From 1957 Christe studied chemistry at the University of Stuttgart . He wrote his diploma thesis (1960) and his doctorate (1961) under Josef Goubeau . In 1962 Christe emigrated to the USA and settled in California. After working as a Senior Research Chemist at Stauffer Chemical Co. in Richmond, he joined the Rocketdyne Division Rockwell International in 1967 . From 1979 he took over the position of head of research there, which he held until 1994. From 1994 to 2005, Christe was also a Senior Staff Advisor for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards Air Force Base . Christe has been a professor at the University of Southern California at the Loker Research Institute since 1994.

Christe is married and has three children. He is a fencer and was active for both the German and American national teams.

research

Christe has been involved in the synthesis of new nitrogen, halogen fluorides and halogen oxide fluorides and their ions since the 1960s. Examples include NF 4 + and ClF 6 + . In 1986, just in time for the 100th birthday of the first presentation of fluorine by Henri Moissan , Christe was able to report on the first completely chemical synthesis of fluorine. Christe is also working on homoleptic nitrogen compounds. In this context, he succeeded in the synthesis of the bent pentazenium, N 5 +, as well as the first experimental detection of the cyclic pentazolate, N 5 - , both important milestones on the way to higher molecular weight polystyrene compounds . In the 1990s, Christe was the first to propose the use of ionic liquids as an energy source in civil and military propulsion systems. Christe is currently working on the development of oxidizing agents to replace ammonium perchlorate, which is banned by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) .

Christe is the author of over 400 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and holds over 60 patents.
