Karl Rainer (born September 12, 1910 in Hamborn ; † 1999 ) was a German painter , industrial graphic artist and art teacher .

Biographical

Karl Rainer grew up in modest circumstances. His talent was discovered early on and promoted in various ways: first by his mother, later also by studying at the Folkwang University of Applied Sciences in Essen , which awarded him a scholarship due to his “extraordinary talent” . Rainer's studies were continued at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , which were temporarily interrupted by war and drafting into the military ( World War II ).

Partly cheerful and pensive, but also partly brooding, Rainer's existential struggle found support in the Christian faith, which shaped him humanly, but - as far as this can be judged for the moment - not artistically.

After the war, Rainer worked as a graphic artist and industrial painter. Many oil paintings were also created at the same time. In 1968 Rainer settled in Rüthen and became a formative artistic figure in the Westphalian region. His working method was characterized by speed and security: carried away by inspiration, he was sometimes able to complete his work in a few hours. As an art teacher, Rainer was involved at adult education centers and grammar schools (especially at Friedrich-Spee-Gymnasium Rüthen ), especially since he had the gift of being able to stimulate and guide.

Work and style

Initially influenced by expressionism , cubism and abstraction , he later found more and more a new naturalism - which today is partly impressionistic . Rainer took his motifs mainly from his environment: initially from the industrial area ( Ruhr area ), but later also from the landscapes of Westphalia , the Lower Rhine , Italy and Spain . In these southern countries it was the lighting conditions in particular that fascinated the painter. "Time and again it is the color of his pictures that impresses," states Walter Dalhoff.
