Karl Riess (born May 20, 1837 in Vienna , † October 25, 1930 in Linz ) was an Austrian architect and city architect.

Life

Karl Riess studied mechanical engineering, agriculture and hydraulic engineering at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna from 1853 to 1858, which was a forerunner of the later Technical University . He received his master builder license in 1868 and then worked successfully in his own master builder business, where he both designed and executed the buildings. He was mainly active in his home district of Wieden . His son Franz Riess joined the company in 1897 and ran it from 1905, but his father continued to work there well into old age.

meaning

Karl Riess built in the historicist style, in which the facade was always divided into a basement and 2 main floors and the windows in the latter were emphasized by rich frames and roofs. Riess started with relatively simple Renaissance forms, but later switched to more elaborate designs and from the late 1880s to neo-baroque forms. Riess particularly emphasized bay windows or house corners. At the beginning of the 20th century, secessionist ornamental forms increasingly appeared on Riess' buildings, although it can no longer be determined whether this was not due to the work of his son.
