Pierrebraunia bahiensis is a species of plant in the genus Pierrebraunia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet bahiensis refers to the occurrence in the Brazilian state of Bahia .

Fruits on Pierrebraunia bahiensis

Pierrebraunia bahiensis grows individually with spherical to short cylindrical to cylindrical, green to gray-green shoots . These reach a height of up to 1.1 meters and a diameter of 8 centimeters. The 9 to 14 vertical ribs are rounded at the edges. The round areoles on it are initially covered with a cream-colored wool and later bald. The finely needle-shaped, somewhat flexible thorns are yellowish to reddish and gray. The single central spine is up to 3 centimeters long. The 6 to 11 radial spines, on old areoles it can be up to 23, are protruding to spread out and up to 1.6 centimeters long.

The tubular, pink flowers appear near the apex and along the upper parts of the shoots. They are 3.2 to 3.9 inches long and reach a diameter of 8 to 10 millimeters. The inner bracts are white. The spherical to egg-shaped fruits are pink in color and 1 to 3 centimeters in diameter.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Pierrebraunia bahiensis is distributed in the Brazilian state of Bahia in the Chapada Diamantina at altitudes of 1000 to 1950 meters. The first specimens were found in 1981. The first description as Floribunda bahiensis was published in 1993 by Pierre Josef Braun (* 1959) and Eddie Esteves Pereira (* 1939). A year later, Nigel Paul Taylor and Urs Eggli assigned them to the genus Arrojadoa . Eddie Esteves Pereira finally placed them in 1997 in the new genus Pierrebraunia .

Pierrebraunia bahiensis is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. classified endangered.
