Franz Riess (born July 3, 1876 in Vienna ; † February 24, 1954 there ) was an Austrian builder and architect .

Life

Franz Riess was the second son of the builder Karl Riess and his wife Anna Österreicher. He attended secondary school and, after graduating from high school from 1893 to 1897, studied engineering at the Technical University in Vienna, but did not graduate. Instead, he joined his father's company. During his studies in 1895 he became a member of the Libertas Vienna fraternity . In 1905 he obtained the master builder license and took over the business alone; however, the father continued to work in the company until 1921.

Three of his four sons died in tragic circumstances. The fourth son Otto also became a builder and joined the company in 1937 as a graduate engineer, where he worked with his father for a few years.

As a master builder, Franz Riess carried out numerous orders from outside hands. In addition, he also made some of his own designs. These buildings stand at the transition from late historicism to art nouveau and are characterized by the adoption of various secessionist decorative elements and a style that emphasizes the surface of the buildings. Since the father worked for the company for several years, it is not always possible to clearly assign designs to a person.
