Theodor Mayer (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodor Heinrich Mayer (born January 3, 1874 in Vienna ; † November 29, 1956 there ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Theodor Mayer attended the State Trade School in Vienna, which he graduated in 1894. Nothing is known about his further training and first activity. From 1906 he worked in an office community with Hans Mayr , whom he knew from school. In some cases, Mayer also acted as the client. With the death of his partner in 1918, Theodor Mayer ended his work as an architect.

Mayer was a Jew, but left the Israelite Community in 1907 and became a Protestant. He married Olga Sarg, with whom he had two sons. In 1939, after Austria was " annexed " to the National Socialist German Reich, Mayer emigrated to London and subsequently lived in Oxford . In 1951 he returned to Vienna.

It is difficult to judge the independent performance of Theodor Mayer, as only one house was built by himself. Together with Hans Mayr, he built mainly residential buildings and villas in the secessionist style and, as a successor to Otto Wagner, in a moderately modern design language.
