Karl Schaifers

Karl Schaifers (born November 21, 1921 in Koblenz , † October 26, 2009 in Heidelberg ) was a German astronomer .

Karl Schaifers studied astronomy and physics in Bonn ; There he received his doctorate in 1952 with the work Investigations into the absolute brightness and the spatial distribution of the F stars .

He then worked at the State Observatory in Heidelberg-Königstuhl. Together with Sebastian von Hoerner , he wrote Meyer's handbook on space (1960) and oversaw the following editions of the work (6th edition 1984). Together with Rudolf Kühn and Hans Elsässer , he founded the magazine Sterne und Weltraum in 1962 and wrote several popular science books.

In 1983 he received the Bruno H. Bürgel Prize of the Astronomical Society for his services in popularizing astronomy.

The asteroid discovered by Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth (1742) Schaifers was named after him.
