Karl Semlitsch

Karl Semlitsch (born August 26, 1944 in Theresienfeld , Lower Austria ) is a retired officer in the Austrian Armed Forces , most recently major general . He was the long-serving military commander of the City of Vienna since 1945.

Life

Semlitsch attended the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt . He then completed general staff training in Vienna, which he completed in 1975 as captain of the general staff. From 1980 he headed the Defense Policy Office in the Austrian Ministry of Defense. In this function he was responsible for the introduction of political education in the armed forces and placed great emphasis on coming to terms with army history.

From 1991 to 2006 he headed the Vienna Military Command. Of all the military commanders in Vienna since 1945, he held this position the longest. His successor in this position was Brigadier Franz Reissner .

He received special recognition for his commitment to greater cooperation between the armed forces and civil disaster control and aid organizations (such as: Licht ins Dunkel ).

In 2003 the Jewish welfare and human rights organization honored B'nai B'rith Semlitsch for "outstanding achievements in the humanitarian field". The reason for this was Semlitsch's commitment to preventing the right-wing extremists from laying a wreath at the grave of the unknown soldier in the crypt at the Vienna Castle Gate .

He has been married to Ernestine Semlitsch, b. Bejsta, and father of sons Martin and Jürgen Semlitsch.
