Karl Spruner von Merz (born November 15, 1803 in Stuttgart , † August 24, 1892 in Munich ) was a German general, cartographer and writer.

Life

After the death of his father, the magazine manager Christoph von Spruner in 1807, he was raised in his grandfather's house in Ingolstadt . In 1814 he joined the Bavarian Cadet Corps in Munich as an apprentice , where he remained in the 1st Jäger Battalion until he was appointed Junker in 1823. In 1825 he was promoted to lieutenant in the 9th Infantry Regiment. During the military service Spruner took up scientific and literary activities.

Karl Spruner von Merz was promoted to major in 1852, lieutenant colonel in 1855 and general in 1883. On October 1, 1855, he was appointed wing adjutant to King Maximilian II . From 1867 to 1870 he was a board member of the Military Chamber of Accounts and the Military Fund Commission and from 1874 to 1877 he was a board member of the General Audit Office. In 1872 he was promoted to real lieutenant general, and in 1883 to general of the infantry. In 1886 he was retired after 72 years in the Bavarian army.

In 1842 he was made an extraordinary member and in 1853 a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

His daughter Josephine (1835–1917), who was also active as a poet, married the Bavarian officer Thomas Graf zu Leinigen-Westerburg-Neuleinigen (d. 1887) in 1855.
