Karl Wilhelm Sack

Karl Wilhelm Sack , also Carl (* 22. November 1792 in Seesen ; † 27. June 1870 in Braunschweig ) was a German district court - registrar and local historian , in particular through his numerous works on the history of the city of Braunschweig famous nationally.

Life

Sack was born the son of a miller in Seesen. In 1813 he was committed to service by the Westphalian military and took part in the wars of liberation from 1814 to 1815 . As a sergeant he served in the Brunswick Hussar Regiment . He was then appointed city ​​commander of the city of Helmstedt in 1816 , where he took over the office of police clerk for the city administration the following year. From 1825 he was a registrar at the district court and was transferred to Braunschweig in this capacity in 1827. In the course of his work, he came into close contact with historical trial files and put together a collection of sources on the history of the city of Braunschweig. Parts of these materials were handed over to the Braunschweig City Archives in 1840 , the remaining writings were only brought there after his death. Among these were numerous records, copies, extracts and original archives. Sack wrote a large number of works on Braunschweig's city and state history.
