Karl Willeke

Karl Willeke (born January 12, 1875 in Schmallenberg , † September 20, 1956 in Arnsberg ) was a German teacher and author .

Life

Karl Willeke was born in Schmallenberg. After school and training at the teachers' college in Warendorf , he moved to the newly built hall school in Hagen in 1908 . There he worked as a secondary school teacher and later as rector. He was also active in local politics in Hagen, as a city councilor for the Center Party . In 1934 Willeke refused to hang a picture of Hitler in his school. Thereupon he was removed from office by the National Socialists .

In 1943, Willeke left Hagen after a bomb attack in order to reside in his hometown. In Schmallenberg, too, he later worked on local politics in the city council as a member of the CDU. After 40 years at school, Willeke moved to live with his daughter in Arnsberg. He died there on September 20, 1956.

Among other things, Willeke wrote sonnets and wrote German-language school books. He also translated Dante's " Divine Comedy " into the Sauerland plateau .
