Karl Wimmer (born October 22, 1889 in Landshut , † April 25, 1971 in Straubing ) was a German educator and composer.

Life

Karl Wimmer was born in Landshut on October 22, 1889 . Like his cousin Heinz Wimmer, he belongs to a family of teachers whose ancestors on both his father's and his mother's side practiced the profession of sacristan, teacher and organist almost without exception for a century and a half. Karl Wimmer entered the preparatory school in Landshut at the age of 13 and graduated from the teachers' seminar in Straubing in 1908 . Outstanding musicians like Josef Salisko and Simon Schott laid the foundation for a solid education in theoretical and practical music. The further deepening in the seminar under Anton Schwarz and J. Schiedermaier was, among other things, a stimulus for first attempts at composition. From 1908 on he worked as an auxiliary school teacher in various places in Lower Bavaria, where he also worked as a choir director and organist. On March 1, Wimmer was finally transferred to his first teaching position in Oberalteich near Bogen . He worked there for 30 years until his retirement. Farewell to Oberalteich was not easy for Wimmer. He moved to Bogen and later to Straubing, where he worked as an organist until he was 70. A few years after his 80th birthday, he died on April 25, 1971.

Karl Wimmer had largely acquired his musical knowledge and skills on a self-taught basis. In order to complete his theoretical knowledge, he took private lessons with Herrmann von Waltershausen in 1941 . His compositions belong to a wide variety of genres: chamber music in a variety of settings, organ and piano music, choral works and church music. Many of his works became widely known through performances on Bavarian and North German radio.

“He is a well-educated musician whose compositions show a completely sound technical ability. As a whole artistic personality, he is well above average, mainly because of his serious sense of responsibility towards tradition. His works are increasingly characterized by the naturalness and originality of the musical invention. "
