Karl Zimmermann (football official)

Karl Zimmermann (born January 17, 1932 in Döbeln , † December 17, 1987 in Berlin ) was a football official in the GDR .

Life

Zimmermann, the son of a worker, learned the trade of woolen fabric maker from 1946 to 1949 and then worked as a weaver. He became a member of the Barracked People's Police (KVP) and in 1956 of the National People's Army (NVA). He served in the " Kurt Kresse " anti-aircraft missile regiment and was released as a lieutenant. Zimmermann joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1953 and after his military service became an employee of the SED district leadership in Döbeln . From 1961 to 1964 he acted as first deputy and from 1964 to 1970 as chairman of the council of the Döbeln district . After studying at the party college "Karl Marx" from 1970 to 1973 with a degree in social science, from 1973 to 1974 he was head of the state and law working group of the SED district leadership in Leipzig . From February 1974 to February 1983 he was First Deputy Chairman of the Leipzig District Council (successor to Eberhard Ammon). He was a member of the Leipzig District Assembly .

Zimmermann was co-opted into the federal executive committee of the German Gymnastics and Sports Association (DTSB) on February 2, 1983 and was elected vice president. At an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee of the German Football Association (DFV), he was appointed Secretary General of the DFV two days later. Compared to his predecessor Werner Lempert, Zimmermann was given extended powers. He carried out these functions until his death; Wolfgang Spitzner was his successor.
