Karl von Eckartshausen (born June 28, 1752 in Haimhausen ; † May 12, 1803 in Munich ) was a German writer, philosopher, enlightener , later theosophist , esotericist and alchemist .

Life

Karl von Eckartshausen was born on June 28, 1752 as the illegitimate child of the castle owner Karl von Haimhausen, son of the Bavarian diplomat Joseph Haimhausen (1682–1711), and the daughter of the castle manager, Maria Anna Eckart. The name "von Eckartshausen" is formed from both parents' names. The child was not recognized by the paternal family.

Karl von Eckartshausen studied philosophy and Bavarian civil law in Munich and Ingolstadt (1770 to 1774). In 1776 he was ennobled and appointed court advisor, in 1777 a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , 1780 book censorship council and 1784 secret archivist in Munich. In 1791 his name appeared on the list of the catalog of the Illuminati of their protectors who were really still working in Munich and also of those who were highly suspicious of Illuminatism with the following entry: "Councilor and Archivarius, one of the most active workers, Illuminat".

Eckartshausen first appeared as an author of legal and educational works. At a young age, Eckartshausen was a member of the Order of the Illuminati, in 1784 he turned away from this secret society and turned to theosophy. He wrote numerous mystical (including cabbalistic ) and alchemical writings.
