Karl von Rodt
Karl Samuel Adolf von Rodt (born October 25, 1805 in Bern , † May 26, 1861 in Bern) was the founder of the Free Evangelical Congregation in Bern.
He came from a Bernese patrician family and joined in protest against the liberalism and rationalism , which in his opinion at that time in the Reformed Church , which from the western Swiss prevailed revival of Réveil dominated Francophone Eglise de Dieu in Bern. In 1829 he was therefore banned from the canton together with others by the Bern government during the restoration period .
He went to Geneva , was ordained to the preaching service by representatives of several free church communities in 1833 and returned to Bern, where the liberal regeneration time had started and freedom of belief and freedom of conscience had been introduced. In Bern, Thun , Steffisburg , Münsingen BE and in the Emmental , he then founded Christian communities and called them Free Evangelical Communities because they were independent of the state. In addition, he maintained international contacts with free church movements throughout Europe.
The Bern community founded an evangelist school in 1837, a boys 'school in 1840, a girls' school in 1855 and built a chapel that was donated by Bernhard von Wattenwyl and which was inaugurated on January 13, 1861, shortly before Rodt's death.
Not to be confused with Karl von Rodt is his brother-in-law Karl Stettler-von Rodt (1802–1870), the long-time chairman of the Evangelical Society in Bern .
