Karl von Spieß

Karl von Spieß (born April 20, 1880 in Vienna , † July 1, 1957 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian teacher and folklorist .

Life

Karl von Spieß studied botany and completed his studies with a doctorate . He worked as a teacher first at the KK Maximilian-Gymnasium Vienna , then from 1907 as a teacher of natural history at the Imperial-Royal State Upper-Gymnasium in Wiener Neustadt and from 1912 to 1925 at the KK Elisabeth-Gymnasium Vienna. From 1925 he lived as a private scholar. He contributed articles to the “correspondence sheet of the German Society for Anthropology , Ethnology and Prehistory” published by Georg Thilenius . Von Spieß corresponded with Georg Hüsing and Wolfgang Schultz about the collaboration in comparative myth research. After the annexation of Austria , von Spieß was in contact with the Rosenberg office . For the so-called high school of the NSDAP , which is currently under construction , he was given the task of expanding and managing the "Research Center for Mythology", which was represented in Vienna and in competition with the SS mythology research based on Rudolf Much with its " Research Association of German Ahnenerbe " was standing.

The assessments of Karl von Spieß's work varied widely. After the Second World War, von Spieß, who wanted to examine the history of culture and religion on a racial basis, was accused of being obviously influenced by National Socialism. The reverse glass painting researcher Friedrich Knaipp (1907–1982), however, viewed him positively as a serious scientist .
