Karl von Zay

Josef Karl Anton Zay , later von Zay , (also Carl ; born November 5, 1783 in Arth ; † February 7, 1854 in Schwyz ) was a Swiss politician .

Life

Zay came from a family of country people that can be traced back to a Jost Zay mentioned in 1353 . His grandfather was the doctor Johann Karl Jakob Zay (1721–1795). His father was the doctor and politician Karl Zay . Maria Katharina von Weber, the daughter of the officer Franz Dominik von Weber , his mother and the politician Franz Xaver von Weber his uncle. Zays Act is therefore in the family archive today by Weber in the State Archives Bern kept.

Zay's education is unknown. As usual in the family, he took on various public offices. From 1818 to 1822 he was state bag master , then from 1822 to 1824 state governor and then from 1824 to 1826 mayor of the district and canton of Schwyz . In 1825 he took over the Weber mansion at Acherhof . In the years 1826 and 1831 he was also the delegate of the Diet . He was also President of the Cantonal Court of Schwyz from 1833 to 1840 .

Zay was honored by the Order of the Golden Spur and made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

The church bailiff Xaver Zay (1809–1885) was his brother-in-law.
