history

In 1771, the upper gate, which stood at the same place, was demolished with the other city gates . The Karlstor in Neckargemünd, like the Karlstor in Heidelberg, was built in honor of the Elector Karl Theodor . In 1788 it was built according to the plans of the architect Friedrich Christoph Dyckerhoff (1751–1834), father of Jacob Friedrich Dyckerhoff . The sculptor Nestel created the sculptural design.

architecture

The Karlstor made of red sandstone in the form of a triumphal arch bears the Latin inscription on the outside : "non urbis securitati ast Caroli Theodori electoris palatini gloriae aedificata porta palationo aque et extero sancta perenabit MDCCLXXXI" (not for the security of the city, but for the glory of the Elector Carl Theodor , the gate will nevertheless survive the times sacred to the Palatinate as to the stranger 1781). On the city side of the gate is written in German: "In honor of the father of the fatherland for the adornment of the city holy to the people".

The Karlstor is crowned by a coat of arms cartouche with a crown and a lion, to the right and left of it are vases made of sandstone.
