Karma Automotive LLC is a US - subsidiary of the large Chinese automotive supplier Wanxiang Group in Costa Mesa , California . Wanxiang also manufactures lithium-ion batteries , electric buses and hybrid buses in China .

The company is based on plug-in hybrid car developer and manufacturer Fisker Automotive , which Wanxiang acquired in a foreclosure auction for $ 149.2 million when it failed to properly repay a residual debt of 168 million in government loans from the United States Department of Energy could. Wanxiang renamed the company after the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sports car developed by Fisker Automotive and built by Valmet from 2011 to 2012 . For its production, Karma Automotive has rented production facilities in Morena Valley .

In June 2020 it became known that Karma was in massive economic difficulties and plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the USA.

A123 Systems

According to the Wall Street Journal , the battery will be supplied by A123 Systems , which also supplied the batteries for the Fisker Karma from Fisker Automotive. Problems with its batteries resulted in several expensive recalls; the bankruptcy of the battery manufacturer made it impossible for Fisker to produce more cars. Wanxiang had also bought A123 Systems after it went bankrupt and had a new battery developed there for the Karma.
