The monastery Karma Gompa ( karma dgon pa ), also Karma Dansa ( karma gdan sa ), is the founding monastery of the Tibetan Buddhist school of Karma Kagyu , the later center of which is (depending on the sources) Tsurphu Monastery, which was built half a decade to four decades later was near Lhasa .
The monastery, founded in 1147, according to other sources in 1184 by Chödzin Gemphel ( chos 'dzin dge' phel ), who later became the 1st Karmapa Düsum Khyenpa ( dus gsum mkhyen pa ), is located at an altitude of 3800 m around 120 km north of Qamdo in Kham in a side valley of the Dza Chu ( Mekong ).
Despite the destruction in the Cultural Revolution , at least the building complex of the main hall and relics of the burial halls of some eminent lamas have survived. a. the grave choruses (stupa) of the Düsum Khyenpa as well as the one in which the mortal remains of the Situ Rinpoche are encased.
Today around 200 monks live permanently in the largely rebuilt monastery, while 500 are closely associated with it.
