Life

Karol Bołoz Antoniewicz

Karol Bołoz Antoniewicz came from an aristocratic Armenian family and moved to Lviv University in 1831 . He enjoyed a good upbringing and was fluent in English, Italian and French. Since he belonged to the higher society, he also dealt with music and poetry. In the war of insurrection in Poland he took part in the corps of General Dwernicki . When the war was over, he returned to his homeland and from there began trips to the Orient for further training.

Returning from these trips, he married Sophie Nikorowicz, who was related to him. The marriage had been approved by the holy see . The marriage had five children, but all of them died early. Eventually Antoniewicz's wife fell ill and no doctors could help her. Therefore they turned to the Jesuit confessor Friedrich Rinn . Should Sophie be healed, she promised to join the Sisters of Mercy and Antoniewicz to join the Jesuits. Eventually she died. Nevertheless, Antonievicz entered the Jesuit order as a novice on September 11, 1839 in Stara Wieś .

During his time with the Jesuits, he lived humbly, obediently, and self-sacrificing so that he was an example to his fellow brothers. He also wrote and composed hymns. He showed a talent for improvisation . This is how the work Majówka w Orzechówce was created, which reports on the customs of his confreres and his own worldview and was available in two copies.

When Antoniewicz took his religious vows , he bequeathed a large part of his fortune to the Lviv Soeurs de la coeur Jésus . He also donated hundreds of books to the Order Library in Stara Wieś. Later he went to Lemberg as a preacher . There he received general appreciation and was able to carry the people away with his sermons. He called for religiosity.

In 1852 he traveled to Prussia as a missionary . There he fell ill with cholera and succumbed to it on November 13, 1852 at Obra, at the age of 44. He had written in Polish and German, which were praised as of good style, deep religiosity and poetics.
