NN high mountain station and overcomes a difference in altitude of 1311 m. It has two cable car supports 36 and 20 meters high, which are located at the Mittenwalder Hut and in the tub . Your two cabins, each for 25 people, travel at a maximum speed of 10 m / s (36 km / h) and take about seven minutes for a trip. The transport capacity is 350 people per hour. On each lane, the railway has a suspension cable with a diameter of 48 mm, a pull cable with a diameter of 23 mm and an auxiliary cable on which the two rescue vehicles can drive to the cabins in an emergency.

View of the mountain station of the Karwendelbahn

Construction of the Karwendelbahn began in 1954. This year a transport cable car was set up and the shell of the valley station was built. However, due to lack of funds, the work could not be resumed next spring and was suspended for several years. Shortly before the completion of the railway built by Pohlig - Heckel - Bleichert (PHB) , an improper blast in the area of the mountain station damaged all the ropes in October 1966. While one suspension rope, the pull rope and the auxiliary rope could be repaired, the other suspension rope had to be replaced. The Karwendelbahn could therefore only be opened on June 7, 1967. It was modernized in 1992. Since there is a rocky path between the mountain station and the beginning of the Dammkar that is hardly accessible in ski clothing in winter, this route was made easier by a tunnel.

The cable car is operated by the Karwendelbahn Aktiengesellschaft .

Next to the mountain station built by the Karwendelbahn Nature Information Center was on 30 July 2008 mountains Karwendel opened that because of its round shape often telescope is named.

The mountain station is the starting point for tours along the Mittenwald Höhenweg and through the Dammkar.

The Karwendel pit, located next to the mountain station, is under special nature protection as it is a retreat for the rare ptarmigan . For this reason, all efforts to build a ski lift directly at the mountain station have so far been rejected .

On Sunday, October 19, 2008, the railway was shut down due to a technical fault. According to eyewitness reports, the passengers who wanted to leave the Karwendel massif by cable car were evacuated with Bundeswehr helicopters.

In 2011 the railway received two new gondolas. However, these can only carry 25 people per trip instead of 33 people in the old gondolas. The investment should help improve comfort. The new gondolas were supplied by the Austrian company Carvatech .
