The Mittenwalder Hütte is an Alpine Club hut of the Mittenwald section of the German Alpine Club .

Location and function

The refuge is at 1518  m above sea level. NHN Höhe northwest below the western Karwendelspitze high above the Isar valley directly above Mittenwald . It is located in the western part of the Northern Karwendel Range in the Karwendel in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen near the border with Tyrol . Because of the panoramic location and the attractive tour options, the Mittenwalder Hut is a popular destination for hikers, but also a good base for mountaineers who want to go on multi-day tours. There are several transitions; the best known is probably the Mittenwalder Höhenweg , which leads over a series of rock peaks in the northern Karwendel range. The routes above the Mittenwalder Hütte are high alpine and can therefore only be recommended for experienced mountaineers. The hut is closed in winter. There is no winter room because the area around the hut is not suitable for ski touring .

history

In 1879 a small workers' shelter was built on the site of today's hut. Soon this was expanded and taken over by the Mittenwald Alpine Club section . The hut has been in operation since 1921. During the Second World War it remained undamaged despite being shot at, but fell victim to an arson attack in 1946. With great energetic effort, the people of Mittenwald completely rebuilt their hut the following year. The large number of visitors over the Karwendelsteig to the western Karwendelspitze meant that the hut had to be expanded several times. Since 1967, a material ropeway has made the supply much easier , so you could do without pack animals. The construction of the Karwendelbahn in the 1970s slowed down the flow to the hut significantly. It was more and more from an alpine base to a hiking destination. The construction of a sewer into the valley in 1998 brought the Mittenwalder Hut the environmental seal of approval for Alpine Club huts for exemplary, environmentally friendly hut operation.
