It is located in the westernmost part of the Karwendel in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen near the border with Tyrol . There are several crossings, the most famous being the Mittenwalder Höhenweg , which leads over a series of rocky peaks of the northern Karwendel range . history
In 1965 the hut was acquired by the Mittenwald Alpine Club and expanded into a generally accessible refuge . In 1975/76 a material ropeway was built to facilitate management, and in 1981 a general renovation was carried out in conjunction with various modifications. In 1985, the Brunnsteinhütte received its first solar module for environmentally friendly power supply, followed in the next few years by several pilot projects for environmentally friendly management, for example the material ropeway is operated with rapeseed oil and 95% of the hut's energy requirements are covered with solar power. In the course of these and other measures, the hut received the environmental seal of approval from the Alpine Club in 2001 for an exemplary, environmentally friendly hut operation. The drinking water situation has been improved since 2014 by opening up a spring in the Sulze gorge and building a water pipe from the gorge to the hut. The difference in altitude from the source to the hut of 120 meters and the flow rate of 1 l / s is used to generate electrical energy by means of a turbine. This means that the hut's electrical energy needs are 100% regenerative. Hans-Peter-Gallenberger has been tenant of the Brunnsteinhütte since 1982.
