Kāschmar ( Persian کاشمر Kāschmar ) is a city in the Razavi-Khorasan Provincein Iran . It was still called Torzhiz until the 18th century . A variant of the name was also Sultanabad .

Geographical location

The city is located 217 km south of Mashhad on the Sish Taraz River at an altitude of 1215 m. The historical name of the region was Pouscht .

Economy and Transport

Around 40 different types of grapes are grown here and the city is a major producer of raisins . Saffron and Persian carpets are also produced here . Among other things , the Khorasan- Nain carpet is woven here.

The city is on the Garmsar – Mashhad railway line , part of the direct rail link from Tehran to Mashhad.

Attractions

The city's attractions include the Friday Mosque of Kāschmar , the Mazar Garden ( Bāgh-e Mazar ), the tombs of Seyyed Mohammad-e Ābed and the Ārāmgāh-e Modarres .

The oldest tree mentioned in the Shahname , the Kashmar cypress , is said to have stood here.

There are two universities in the city, Payam-e Nur University and Azad Islamic University of Kashmar .
