Masaki Kashiwara ( Japanese 柏 原 正 樹 , Kashiwara Masaki ; born January 30, 1947 in Yūki in Japan ) is a Japanese mathematician .

Masaki Kashiwara studied at the University of Tokyo (Bachelor in 1969, Master's degree in 1971) with Mikio Satō and received his doctorate from him in 1974 in Kyoto . 1977/1978 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1971 he was assistant at the RIMS ( Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Kyoto ), 1973 assistant professor at the RIMS, 1978 in the same function at the University of Nagoya and from 1984 professor at the RIMS. Since 2001 he has been its director.

Kashiwara worked in micro-local analysis , on hyperfunctions and on the D-module theory, developing ideas from his teacher Mikio Sato and working a lot with French mathematicians ( Pierre Schapira ). The subject area is also called "Algebraic Analysis" by her school. He also deals with mathematical physics. In 1981, together with Jean-Luc Brylinski, he proved the Kazhdan- Lusztig conjectures in geometric representation theory (also independently proven by Alexander Beilinson and Joseph Bernstein ).

His theory of the D-modules, independently found in Russia by Joseph Bernstein , found application in algebraic geometry ( Perverse Sheaves ), especially after Kashiwara was in Paris in 1976/77. Around the same time as Zoghman Mebkhout (1979) he solved the generalized Riemann-Hilbert problem in 1980 , where higher-dimensional complex manifolds are considered instead of Riemann surfaces (so-called Riemann-Hilbert correspondence).

He has been an external member of the French Academy of Sciences since 2002 . In 1981 he received the Iyanaga Prize of the Japanese Mathematical Society , in 1987 the Asahi Prize and the Prize of the Japanese Academy of Sciences. For 2018 he was awarded the Kyoto Prize in the Mathematics category and the Chern Medal . In 1978 he gave a plenary lecture at the ICM in Helsinki ( Microlocal Analysis ) and in 1990 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Kyōto ( Crystallizing the q-analogue of universal enveloping algebras ).
