Kaspar Füger the elder
Kaspar Füger (* before 1521 in Dresden ; † after 1592 there) was a German Protestant pastor and hymn poet .
life and work
Kaspar Füger was born in Dresden before 1521. He worked as the Saxon court preacher in Torgau , later he worked as a pastor at the Dresden Kreuzkirche . After 1592 he died there; his son of the same name had made a name for himself as a composer of hymns and as a Kreuzkantor .
His Christmas carol Wir Christenleut habn jetzund Freud (before 1586) appeared in various compositions. Johann Sebastian Bach set several stanzas to music in his Christmas cantatas , based on the melody by Johann Crüger , 1653: The Son of God appeared in Darzu , BWV 40, Our mouth is full of laughter , BWV 110, and as the final chorale of the third part of the Christmas Oratorio . The song can be found in Protestant church hymn book number 22.
