Kastro Tzilikas ( Greek Κάστρο Τζαλίκας ( f. Sg. )) Or Kastro Sofikou ( Greek Κάστρο Σοφικού ( f. Sg. )) Is the ruin of a small hill fort 1.5 km northeast of the Greek town of Sofiko in the Peloponnese . It is located on the highest point of the 780 m high mountain Tzilika, which is also called Tsaika. The castle is not mentioned in either Frankish or Ottoman documents.
description
The upper castle is rectangular in shape, about 53 m long and 18 m wide. The dry masonry walls are about 2 m high and 1.40 m thick. The western wall has been largely destroyed. This was probably the entrance to the castle. In the west, the foundation walls of a tower are 6.10 m by 6.10 m. From here one had a good view of the western valley and the road connecting Nea Epidavros and Corinth and of the Saronic Gulf . In the eastern part of the castle there is a church which is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ ( Greek Ανάληψη του Κυρίου ). It is built over an old cistern.
The lower castle extends east and south of the upper castle. It has a length of about 145 m, a width of 75 m and a size of about 11,000 m². The walls, which are the same thickness as those of the upper castle, are poorly preserved. The foundation walls of buildings can be seen in the lower castle. A layer of brick runs in the walls at a certain height. To the east of the upper castle and inside the lower castle there is an older church. It is dedicated to the birth of Mary ( Greek Γενέσιο της Θεοτόκου ).
