Kasulu is a district in the Tanzanian region of Kigoma . The administrative center is in Kasulu , the second largest city in the region. The district is bordered by Burundi to the north, the Kibondo district to the east, the Uvinza district to the south, and the Kigoma and Buhigwe districts to the west .

The district has a size of 6203 square kilometers and around 426,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The country lies on a hilly plateau that rises to 1700 meters above sea level. The western part is drained into Lake Tanganyika via small rivers , the east via the Malagarasi River , which forms the eastern border and further south flows into Lake Tanganyika. The climate in Kasulu is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The precipitation falls mainly from November to April, where it rains over 150 millimeters per month. The months of June, July and August are very dry. On average, it rains 1200 millimeters a year. The annual average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius, the coolest is July with 19.7 degrees, the warmest month is September with 21.9 degrees Celsius.

The largest ethnic group in Kasulu are the Ha . In 1988 the district had 319,711 inhabitants, the number rose to 437,053 in 2002 and further to 634,038 in 2012. The growth rate was particularly high from 2002 to 2012 in the district council. Here the annual growth was 5.5 percent, which corresponds to a doubling of the population every 12.7 years. In 2012 around sixty percent of those over five spoke Swahili, and in the city an additional ten percent spoke Swahili and English. The illiteracy rate was 26 percent in the city and 38 percent in the countryside.

  • Education: The district council has 77 elementary schools and 18 high schools.
  • Energy: The district is not connected to the national electricity grid. There is a local hydropower plant that provides electricity for the hospital and a diesel power plant with 2 * 1.25 megawatts, operated by Tanzania Electric Supply (TANESCO) since 2011, which supplies electricity for the city of Kasulu, Buhigwe and Makere. Ninety percent of households use wood as an energy source for cooking (as of 2015).

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: The most important branch of the economy is agriculture, it generates 85 percent of the income. The main crops for personal use are corn, beans, cassava and bananas, while tobacco and coffee are grown for sale.
  • Roads: The T9 national road runs through the district. Coming from Mpanda in the south, it crosses the district and leads north to Biharamulo . The national road T19 branches off to Kigoma south of the city of Kasulu .

Attractions

Gombe Stream National Park: At 52 square kilometers, this is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania. It is located in the districts of Kigoma and Kasulu and is known for the chimpanzees that Jane Goodall researched here .

Others

  • Refugees: Since the 1960s, people have been fleeing the Republic of the Congo to Tanzania because of various conflicts . The wave of refugees had its first peak in 1996. By 2014, almost half a million people had fled the Congo. In 2016, 137,843 refugees lived in Nyarugusu refugee camp in Kasulu district.
  • Partnership: The Neukirchen Mission in Neukirchen-Vluyn maintains a partnership with Kasulu. The main topic is the Christian education of the youth.
