Kigoma is a district in western Tanzania with the administrative center in the city of Kigoma , which is also the capital of the Kigoma region . The district borders in the north on Burundi , in the east on the Buhigwe district , in the southeast on the Kasulu district , in the south on the Uvinza district and in the west over Lake Tanganyika on the Republic of the Congo .

The district of Kigoma has an area of ​​9396 square kilometers, of which 1204 square kilometers are water surface of Lake Tanganyika, and around 427,000 inhabitants (2012 census). From Lake Tanganyika in the west, which is 800 meters above sea level, the land rises steeply to 1,800 meters. Then it slopes downhill to the Kaseke River, which flows into Lake Tanganyika south of the city of Kigoma. The climate in the district depends heavily on the altitude, but is largely tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . Depending on the topographical location, it rains 600 to 1600 millimeters annually, mostly in the higher altitudes. The temperatures vary between 22 and 32 degrees Celsius.

history

In the era of the slave trade, Kigoma was an area where slaves were gathered. In 1871, the journalist Henry Stanley found the missing researcher David Livingstone in the area of ​​today's city of Kigoma on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The district was established in 1982. In 2011 the Uvinza district was split off and Kigoma received its current form.

The largest ethnic group is the Ha , in rural areas they make up 95 percent of the population. The population rose from 361,474 in 1988 to 427,027 in 2012. The decrease in the population in rural areas is also due to the formation of new districts. The population in the city is growing rapidly, the annual increase of around four percent corresponds to a doubling time of seventeen years. It is expected that more than half of the region's population will live in the city by 2030.

Facilities and services

  • Education: 109 primary schools and 27 secondary schools are available in rural areas to educate young people. Three of the primary schools and eight of the secondary schools are privately owned.
  • Health: There are two hospitals, six health centers and 56 pharmacies throughout the district.

Economy and Infrastructure

Most of the district's residents make a living from agriculture. This produces as much food as is needed.

  • Agriculture: In 2012, 97 percent of rural households were engaged in arable farming, and 98 percent had pets. The most important crops for self-sufficiency were corn, cassava, beans, sweet potatoes, bananas and peanuts. Coffee and aubergines were also grown for sale. The most common farm animals kept were chickens, cattle and goats.
  • Railway: The Tanganyika Railway, operated by the Tanzania Railway Corporation, connects Kigoma with Dar es Salaam four times a week (as of 2020). In 2017, the conversion of the 2,561-kilometer line to standard gauge began, and in summer 2019 the first 205 kilometers near Dar es Salaam were completed.
  • Roads: The main road link is the T19 national road, which runs north from the city of Kigoma to Burundi and east to the T9. This connects Mpanda in the south with Lake Victoria in the north.
  • Airport: From Kigoma there are two flights a week to Dar es Salaam and to Tabora (as of 2020). In 2018 the airport had 28,000 passengers.
  • Port: The port is operated by the Tanzania Ports Authority. It serves primarily as a transshipment point for Dar es Salaam cargo and has a theoretical capacity for bulk cargo of 85,000 tons and for 3,000 twenty-foot standard containers (TEU) per year.

Attractions

  • Gombe Stream National Park : With an area of ​​52 square kilometers, this is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania. He became famous when the British behavioral scientist Jane Goodall carried out her studies on chimpanzees here in the 1960s.
  • Lake Tanganyika: In the west, the district borders on the longest lake in the world at 660 kilometers and the second deepest lake at 1436 meters.
  • Livingstone Memorial: A monument was erected at the point where Henry Stanley found the missing David Livingstone and a small museum was set up next to it.

In the Kigoma district, a district council and a town council are elected every five years. In the 2019 election, Enock Chobaliko on the district council and Hussein Ruhava on the city council were elected chairmen.
